The discovery call is the first and most important part of our initial interactions with clients. It helps us get acquainted and establishes a rapport. But it’s much more than just an introductory chat – it’s where we begin the process of truly understanding your vision for the corporate video. This call is a crucial opportunity for us to dig deep and uncover the specifics of what you want your video to achieve.
During a discovery call, the goal is to get as clear a picture as possible of your needs. We don’t just ask about the logistics; we want to know your goals, your challenges, and how you envision the final product. Are you looking to engage a specific audience? Is the video part of a larger campaign? Is there a particular tone or message you want to convey? By answering these questions, we can create a tailored approach to crafting your video.
In addition, a discovery call allows us to propose ideas, discuss potential challenges, and ensure that we're aligned with your expectations. This initial conversation helps us identify any existing branding elements, such as logos or color schemes, that need to be incorporated into the video. Even if you don’t have everything figured out yet, the discovery call helps you gain clarity on the important aspects of the project, ensuring that we move forward with a shared vision.
In this article, I want to go through four of the most important questions we ask during this call. Even if you’re not using us or any corporate video production service, these will be really crucial questions for you and your team to answer to make sure your video campaigns are accomplishing your business’ goals.
1. Where will these corporate videos live?
Videos can be multi-purpose and reside on several different platforms, but only if they were made that way in the first place. There’s a very big difference between a video meant for your homepage, one meant for social media, and one meant for training or tutorials.
Sure, one video can be physically repurposed by changing its aspect ratio, but generally, the goals and style of the video should be different across these different platforms. Check out the different ways our clients have used their corporate videos here.
2. Who is your audience?
Are you looking to attract customers with this video? If so, who is your ideal customer? Or is this for customer retention? Is this to introduce a new product or service to current clients? Is this simply an explainer video for your audience to better understand your value proposition?
There is a lot to consider when thinking about who is the perfect audience for your video, and each video should be tailored to fit each audience. Check out some useful tips here.
3. What are your brand guidelines?
Here we’ll want to know about your tone, your brand colors, language, and other marketing materials we should be aware of so our video can fit in seamlessly with your website and any media you already have. We’ll also need any video assets, logos, images, etc. that you would like included in your video. If your company doesn’t have any of these or you’re still developing them, that’s fine too. We’ll talk through what you have in mind and create a style to match.
4. What is your ultimate goal with this corporate video?
This question is potentially the most important we need answered from clients. And that’s because it effects the entire structure of the script. If we’re looking to sell something, or get customers into a funnel, we’ll want a strong call to action at the end. If this is simply brand awareness, a strong call to action may be inappropriate, and the entire feel of the video would be completely different. This will effect the tone all the way through the video and how much exactly we describe the product or service vs. giving an overview of the company.
Getting ready for your corporate video discovery call

It’s not absolutely necessary to have answered all of these questions prior to a call. In fact, there are many parts of this you may want to talk through with the production company first. A corporate video discovery call is more than just a meeting – it’s the foundation for a successful video project.
However, just knowing what to expect puts you in the driver’s seat and will help the production company better understand your vision. And completing your vision is really what it’s all about.
